Raw Apple Cider Vinegar - An Age Old Elixir

Updated on March 23, 2010

Vinegar and its use have been documented for centuries in human history. As a tonic, the Babylonians used vinegar dating back as far as 5000 BC. The date palm, at that time, was used to create wine, vinegar and was also used as a pickling agent. Urns from ancient Egypt dating back to 3000 BC have been discovered containing vinegar residues. In Chinese historical documents, apple cider vinegar benefits were revered as far back as 1200 BC.

The medicinal properties of apple cider vinegar have been discussed today in modern medicine. The noble apple has proven its many healthful benefits - thus the phrase, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." It contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and dietary fiber. Apples contain no fat or sodium. They are a delicious product of mother nature. In their pure form, they are not only tasty but high in nutritional value. The goodness of the apple can be extracted and retained in apple cider vinegar if the process used to develop the ACV does not alter its nutrients.

During the fermentation process, which is what creates vinegar from crushed apple, the nutrients of the apple are preserved while additional enzymes and organic acids are produced. The brand that I like best (and most popular brand) is Bragg's raw apple cider vinegar. It is pure and organic and retains all of the nutrients of the apple.

ACV can be used as an antiseptic. It is rich in easily absorbable minerals, magnesium and pectin. To maximize the health benefits of apple cider vinegar, drink it as a tonic. This is a popular use that is healthful and delicious. Mix 2 to 3 teaspoons into an 8 ounce glass of purified water and drink before or during each meal everyday.

Some use this elixir as a means to help balance their internal pH making their systems more alkaline. However, because it is acidic in your mouth, it can erode the enamel on your teeth. It is important to rinse before bedtime after drinking ACV.

When you consume regularly, it can help to resolve the following issues and more: acne, asthma, warts, weight loss, yeast infections, eczema, fatigue, fungus, headaches, heartburn, insomnia, sore throat, ulcers and varicose veins.

Bragg's raw apple cider vinegar is great in salad dressings as well. I make one using a crushed clove of garlic with a squeeze of lemon juice extracted from an organic fresh lemon, add a few tablespoons of extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil, a splash of ACV, a pinch of turmeric spice and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well to co-mingle then pour over your salad. This is a simple and delicious way to fit apple cider vinegar into your diet.

Pure, organic and simply nutritious, raw apple cider vinegar is a great addition to your diet.
